About University of California Santa Barbara
The university first started as Santa Barbara State College, focusing on teacher training, home economics, foreign languages and industrial arts, joining the University of California system in 1944, becoming one of the 10 general campuses that are part of the system.
UC Santa Barbara or UCSB is known today as being a comprehensive doctoral university, consisting in 5 colleges, offering 55 graduate and 87 undergraduate degrees.
The university campus is the 5th largest one in the UC system, having an enrollment of over 18 000 graduate and almost 3000 undergraduate students.
There are 12 National Research Centers housed at UCSB, including the Southern California Earthquake Center, the Materials Research Laboratory, as well as the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics.
